Bodhgaya History

Bodhgaya History
The history of Bodhgaya is dated back of 7th century B.C when it was the part of the first small kingdoms of India named Magadh Empire. This place emerged in fame during approximately 500 BC when a prince named Siddhartha relinquished all the material pleasures and traveled as a monk, reached the sylvan banks of Falgu River, near the city of Gaya. From that time, Gaya began the real history. Siddhartha then performed exhausting efforts through meditation, attained enlightenment or Nirvana under a Bodhi tree.
The devoted followers of Gautama Siddhartha started to visit the place where he had achieved enlightenment during the full moon in the month of Vaisakh (April-May), according to the Hindu calendar. Increasingly, the holy place became renowned as Bodh Gaya. The day of enlightenment has been termed as Buddha Purnima, and the tree as the Bodhi Tree. According to Buddhist records, after leaving his home Prince Gautama Siddhartha, while rambling, came to the banks of river Falgu near the city of Gaya in 500 B.C. There under a Peepal tree he sat to meditate on the excesses of life and to develop the philosophy of a balanced approach towards it.
The history of Bodh Gaya is recognized by many sources of writings and pilgrimage accounts. Leading among these are the accounts of the Chinese pilgrims Fa-Hian in the 5th century and Huen-Tasang in the 7th century. The area was at the heart of a Buddhist civilization for centuries, until it was damaged by Turkish evader Bakhtiar Khilji in 13th century A.D.
